If you are pregnant, lactating, taking Accutane® or have a chronic history of cold sores, we do not recommend this treatment. You should also be aware that since any exfoliation increases photosensitivity to the sun - you must use sun protection.

Glycolic (Non-Buffered) 10% - 70%
A non-buffered glycolic acid means that the product has a lower pH. This is what you want in an acid (pH 1-3). Buffered glycolic acids have additional ingredients with higher pHs, such as 3.5 (typical for buffered). The problem with buffered is that it is less effective in peeling and loosening the cellular glue that constructs the top dead layers of skin. Once a pH creeps towards 4, it is becoming neutral and heading towards alkaline.



Pure water, for instance has a pH of 7 (Neutral). Most facial cleansers and creams have a pH of 4 to 8. This means they cannot penetrate the skin at all.

Jessner's Peel
Jessner's peel is an excellent and reliable method for smoothing the skin's surface, removing surface pigmentation and sun damage, and generally freshening and brightening with very low risk. It peels only the epidermis and therefore is unable to remove deep wrinkles or dermal pigmentation but is very effective for restoring a healthy smoothness to sun damaged rough freckly dry or crepy skin.

The Jessner's peel is one that causes a fair bit of redness, often turning bright red rather than pink at the time of the peel. On average patients feel mild to moderate burning and stinging with this peel. This stinging persists to some degree for 15 - 30 minutes. During the next 1 - 3 days, skin subjected to a mild Jessner's peel can develop a persistent mild red-brown coloration. This may be streaky. For 2 - 3 days, the skin feel like a layer of plastic film has been applied, and then it exfoliates for an additional 2 - 4 days. Normally the skin appears wind-burned with moderate flaking but actual peeling is rare. With a stronger Jessner's peel the exfoliation may last as long as 8 - 10 days. Some significant actual peeling may also be seen with this peel rather than just dry, flaking skin. Crusting and weeping are not seen with Jessner's peel. The depth of a Jessner's peel is related to the preparation of the skin prior to peeling, the thickness of the stratum corneum, the sensitivity of the skin, the number of coats of solution that are applied and the method of application.

Post peel care
Because most patients feel that their skin is tight and mask-like, frequent use of creamy emollients is helpful. The peeling skin may be a little red and sensitive, so staying with bland, fragrance free moisturizers is best. A mild topical steroid cream or ointment can be used 2 - 3 times a day to calm the skin. During the healing phase of the peel, patients can attempt to wear makeup (after applying a moisturizer) but definitely cannot use scrubs, masks, astringents, toners, or retinoic acid or alpha- hydroxy acids. These products can be resumed 48 hours after the peel has fully healed.

Complications
Because a Jessner's peel is a superficial peel, complications are rare. The most common complaints associated with Jessners are persistent irritation or stinging, streaky redness, and slow peeling. True complications are the rare occurrences of allergic reaction, toxicity from resorcinol or salicylic acid, infection, and persistent redness.

PIGMENT PEEL® PLUS
The BioMedic Pigment Peel Plus is a skin rejuvenation treatment for all skin types, especially stubborn hyper pigmentation, discoloration, sun damaged and aging skin.

Skin must be prepped for a period of six weeks for this or any other deeper or more aggressive chemical treatment, with Retinoids, hydroquinone, and glycolic acid products to ensure an even result.

Pigment Peel Plus is a modified TCA chemical peel designed to destroy damaged skin layers and initiate rejuvenation in the deeper layers of the skin. The exfoliation and peeling will last approximately 5-7 days. The patient may feel a mild to moderate stinging while the peel is on the skin. The peel is self-neutralizing and there is no need for removal. The patient is then treated with Gentle Healing Ointment and sunscreen after the peel to protect the skin.

The "Blue" Peel
The Blue Peel®, developed by Dr. Zein E. Obagi, is a trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peel used to rejuvenate skin and eliminate fine lines, scarring, and pigmentation problems. The Blue Peel is a medium depth chemical peel. The TCA acid used is stronger than those used for micro peels and imposes a longer recovery period of approximately 10 days. The Blue Peel cannot affect dynamic wrinkles that have occurred over time, such as crow’s feet, scowl lines, and forehead creases.

The Blue Peel has a built-in safety valve to prevent the chemical agent to over penetrate. That safety valve is the blue dye, which is applied along with TCA. The blue color helps the person applying your peel know how deep the chemical has penetrated and is therefore helpful in determining when to stop.

The Blue Peel will turn skin blue for a few days. Flaking and peeling begin 4-5 days after your peel and finish within 7-10 days. You may engage in your normal activities (while still being blue) immediately following your peel, but, if you have an important event planned, you will not want to have a peel within 2-3 weeks of that event.

For optimal results, the Blue Peel should be repeated as early as six months. Thereafter, additional mini or micropeels will help maintain the result. As with all peels, adherence to a physician-supervised skin care program will optimize your results and make them more lasting.


The MICROPEEL®
The goal of a BioMedic Micropeel® is to clarify, improve texture, and make the skin more uniform in color. The Micropeel® begins with the cleansing and degreasing of the skin. The next step consists of a physical or enzymatic exfoliation. Exfoliation frees the skin of dead cellular layers and protein.

Following the exfoliation step is the application of a 15-30% glycolic acid. The glycolic acid stays on the skin no longer than 2 minutes. This step frees the skin of debris from the pores helping to reduce acne related conditions, as well as, lessening the appearance of fine lines and brown spots.

If extractions are needed, they will be performed immediately following the application of glycolic acid. Cryogenic therapy is the next phase of the procedure. This step involves a light freezing of the skin, which results in an anti-inflammatory response and helps pores to appear smaller.

The final stage of this treatment is the application of sunscreen and a moisturizer. Following the treatment, makeup can be applied immediately and daily activities resumed. Most people will notice a change in the skin right away. This peel is recommended in a series of 6 with treatments @ 4 weeks apart. The Micropeel® is also a wonderful peel for "maintenance".


The MICROPEEL Plus® (Acne Peel)
