Breast augmentation surgery typically uses silicone gel implants or saline implants to increase breast size or restore breast volume following weight loss or pregnancy. Breast augmentation can also be used to help correct natural breast asymmetry or attain a more rounded breast shape.
Although most breast augmentation surgeries involve implants, the procedure can also be done by transferring fat from another area of your body to your breasts.
Some of the reasons women choose to have breast augmentation are:
Although breast augmentation will increase volume and create symmetry, it can’t be used to correct severely sagging breasts. Sagging breasts can be addressed, however, when breast lift surgery is performed in combination with breast augmentation.
When it comes to selecting implants for breast augmentation, you have two choices: Implants made of silicone gel, or implants that contain saline. Both choices are safe and FDA-approved.
The primary difference between the two has to do with how they look and feel. Many patients who opt for silicone gel implants feel that they look and feel more like a natural breast.
Saline implants, on the other hand, are easier to insert and replace, if need be, and they also tend to be less expensive.
Even after you select the type of implant you want, there are further distinctions between firmness and shape. Dr. Colon can help you understand all of your options so you can make an informed choice.
Breast augmentation is a fairly straightforward surgery. After administering IV sedation, Dr. Colon makes an incision, lifts the breast tissue, creates a pocket within your breast or chest, and places the implant within that pocket.
A variety of factors, including your anatomy and Dr. Colon’s recommendations, help determine where your incision will be, how your implant is inserted, and where it’s positioned in your chest.
Dr. Colon can create an implant pocket either over or under the pectoral muscle. Placing an implant beneath your pectoral muscle may interfere less with breastfeeding and mammograms.
It’s important to remember that even though breast implants are intended to last for the rest of your life, replacement does sometimes become necessary.
After your breast augmentation surgery, you should continue to have periodic examinations with Dr. Colon so she can monitor your implants.
